While losing myself in Barnes and Noble last week for a few hours, I stumbled upon a book full of cross-stitch patterns and ideas for great gift and household ideas that included cross stitchery. And while I'm seriously considering buying the book, in the mean time, it gave me a fabulous idea:
I'm going to make my grandmother some cross stitched placemats for Christmas.
Problem is that I have no idea what kind of pattern to use. I don't want anything particularly childish and I think I'm leaning towards something floral or scenic. I haven't decide how many I want to do just yet (enough for family dinner or just two for her and my grandfather) but I'm obviously on a deadline. I have all the materials - including some placemats, but I need to figure out what to put on them!
It has to be something that works more or less year round (nothing Christmas-y or summery) and could be anything from a border to a little scene or person. I'm up for all ideas - whether they're online pattern or just thoughts!

You could do a border and put their monogram in the middle of it.
1If I stumble across anything I will ssend it your way.
2What colors are their kitchen? I have a ladybug/apple kitchen thing going on (couldn't decide which I liked better so I chose both!) and something red would be neat in mine. If they have yellow, you could do lemons, etc. Can't wait to see what you pick!
3Geez. I think that it's white as are the vast majority of rooms in their house.
But
some sort of fruit or veggie would be really cute, particularly one they grow in their garden! Maybe a couple different things for different seasons...?
4I think this is a lovely idea. I agree with barbie and do a trim/border that matches her kitchen or do her favorite color(s) and do a nice monogram on it. You could also do a spritual poem on it or the Lordes prayer.
5I like all the above ideas. I can't seem to think of any other ideas right now, but no matter what you do, your grandma will love it so be sure to have fun!! Happy Stitching
6I cross stitched some bread covers for my husband's grandparents once and had the same dilemma. I settled on just doing the corners with a representation of each of the four season, that way they could use the corner with the current season at the top of the bread basket. I'm not sure what happened to the pattern book I used but I'll look for it. Hopes this helps.
